smashbox make-up

there is nothing i like more than trying out something new, particularly if it makes me look and feel just that little bit more fabulous.

i was lucky enough to snag an invitation or two to the incredible smashbox studios during my time in lalaland and have been a big fan of the make-up range for a while.

finally the beauty products created for the camera are not just available to us brits online, the range can now be found in good old boots. hoorah.

to celebrate the new partnership the lovely people at smashbox invited me to their on location party at the music rooms. the large red door hanger sealed the deal for me – i was in.

we arrived to a thumping party with lots of gorgeous models milling around while fashion and beauty bods drinking up the party.

i didn’t get very far into the bash – i arrived at the make-up and hair stations and gladly accepted the demonstrations offered. what can i say, i love a good pamper.

not only did i get the chance to sample all of the hottest beauty products from the brand, with the help of an expert make-up artist to boot, but i was also treated to having my hair styled, not once, but twice. first it was teased into an elaborate braided up ‘do before it was heated into glamorous curls tumbling around my soldiers.

if that wasn’t enough, eye-wateringly strong patron cocktails were being served, and going down a treat, while gemma cairney worked her magic on the decks. sadly we missed alunageorge, they were leaving as we arrived which was very disappointing indeed, but i was very quickly distracted with all the beauty treats to behold.

after being pampered we made full use of the photobooth and despite taking inspiration from the iconic smashbox prints on display we proved to be rather inept models. hey ho we found ourselves rather a-muse-ing.

bad puns aside, what you really need to know about smashbox is this – there are several products that will rock you world, so much so they will become firm favourites in your make-up bag. so here’s my rundown….

1) photo finish foundation primer (£25) – this silky smooth formula slides onto your skin and is jam-packed with vitamins a & e, grape seed extract and green tea. the most excellent prep prior to putting one’s face on.

2) o-gloss intuitive lip gloss (£16) – oh.my.goodness. this is amazing. a clear gloss until  rubbed on the lips where it turns your lips your very own custom shade of pink – ah-mazing. you should also check out the o-glow intuitive cheek colour (£21)- same idea, different body part, just as brilliant.

3) be legendary lipstick in true red (£15.50) – a long-lasting and vibrant lipstick in the perfect festive hue. it will leave you pout whispering ‘hey there hot stuff, come and kiss me’.smashbox legendary red lipstick

4) image factory photo op eyeshadow palette – icon (£31.50) with key shades for the autumn season this palette will become your make-up bag staple and the darker hues will take you eyes from day to night in an instant. Smashbox Icon eye shadow palette

this is just the tip of the iceberg – there are oodles of innovative products to get your hands on, if you don’t know smashbox now, you should. the brand believes ‘life is a photoshoot and the world is your set’ – i totally agree.

warm and cosy spiced pumpkin soup

warm and cosy pumpkin soup, best pumpkin soup recipe, butternut squash recipe, creamy pumpkin soup, spicy pumpkin soup, autumn recipes, peanut butteredbaby, it’s cold outside.

well, admittedly not outright freezing yet, but the chill has most certainly set in and this week was ushered in with dark skies and downpour. despite my near-constant moaning about the lack of british summer, this time of year finds me surprisingly cheery about the onset of autumn as the novelty of crunchy golden leaves under foot, cashmere jumpers, wooly socks and cosy nights in are still fresh. give me a week or two. it will lose it’s charm i’m sure.warm and cosy pumpkin soup, best pumpkin soup recipe, butternut squash recipe, creamy pumpkin soup, spicy pumpkin soup, autumn recipes, peanut buttered

while i’m embracing the chill though, i get all excited for slow-cooked stews, hot chocolates a go-go, and my all-time autumn favourite, my mum’s pumpkin soup. this soup is cherished in my family. no one – i say, no one – makes pumpkin soup like my mama. (nor christmas trifle, lasagna or those aforementioned muffins, while we’re at it, but i digress).

a bowlful of this is guaranteed to warm even the coldest of bellies. it’s hearty and creamy, with just enough of that spice you want to heat all your senses on a grey old drizzly evening.warm and cosy pumpkin soup, best pumpkin soup recipe, butternut squash recipe, creamy pumpkin soup, spicy pumpkin soup, autumn recipes, peanut butteredwarm and cosy pumpkin soup, best pumpkin soup recipe, butternut squash recipe, creamy pumpkin soup, spicy pumpkin soup, autumn recipes, peanut buttered

now, a little disclaimer: the name of this soup is slightly misleading, as it actually uses butternut squash. but down under, us odd aussies call them butternut pumpkins, and class them as such. so technically it is butternut squash soup, which is no less delicious, but i couldn’t bear to change the name of this beloved recipe, which has always been ‘pumpkin soup’ in my house. use butternut squash, use butternut pumpkin if you’re in oz, and use a small pumpkin if that’s handy too. i’m not fussy. warm and cosy pumpkin soup, best pumpkin soup recipe, butternut squash recipe, creamy pumpkin soup, spicy pumpkin soup, autumn recipes, peanut buttered

you will need:

  • 1 butternut squash (or small pumpkin) approx. 2lb 2oz
  • 1 large potato
  • 1 onion
  • 1 celery stalk
  • 1 litre of vegetable stock
  • 1/2 tsp ground chilli powder
  • 2/3 cup double cream
  • salt and pepper to taste
  • a few dollops of créme fraiche
  • chives for garnish

let the vegetables and stock simmer on the stovetop until the vegetables are soft and give way when pressed with a spoon. transfer in batches to a blender and puree, with the spout removed to allow for steam (cover with a dishcloth instead). once all the soup is smooth, return to to the pot and stir in the cream. at this point i allow to sit, covered, for several hours to really let the flavours develop, and then return to the heat to warm through when i’m ready to eat.warm and cosy pumpkin soup, best pumpkin soup recipe, butternut squash recipe, creamy pumpkin soup, spicy pumpkin soup, autumn recipes, peanut buttered

ladle your creamy golden liquid between bowls, add a decadent dollop of créme fraiche and a sprinkling of chives. add thickly sliced hunks of toasted bread dripping in butter to dunk into the warm soup. snuggle up on the couch in front of an old movie, and slurp smugly as you watch the wind and rain howl against your window.
