watermelon mani

i’m still into my ‘let’s pretend it’s spring by wearing bright and perky manicures’ phase. it’s not ideal, but it’s necessary. i’m giving london two more weeks to get its sh*t together before i’m hauling ass back to sydney, where it is currently 29 degrees. in autumn.

in the meantime, i’m channelling summer with this fruity little number. ain’t she cute?watermelon nail art manicure

i was having a little play with polka dots (you know about my obsession – and here’s a secret, you guys only see about a third of the polka dot manis that adorn my nails. that’s how common they are) and randomly tried black dots on this punchy watermelon pink.

the effect didn’t look too different to watermelon seeds, so i just went ahead and added a white and green stripe to the edge of the nail. ét voila: a cutie patootie take on my favourite fruit.

to avoid smearing, keep your two coats of pink as thin as possible and really, truly wait for them to be completely dry before going about your dotting and striping.

i do the whole end of the nail white, then add the green on top as its easier than trying to paint two really thin stripes side by side. but keep in mind that by this point you’re working with four coats of nail varnish – thick and gloopy if you don’t allow them to dry properly.

so remember: two coats of pink. dry completely. black dots and white stripe. dry completely. green stripe. dry completely. top coat. time consuming, but worth it – you don’t want to get to the very last step and ruin it all by smudging. be patient.

opi colourcopia

andrea can create all manner of interesting nail art all by herself but i’m more than happy to leave my manicure to the professionals.

last week we were invited to the opi colourcopia nail bar in westfield shepherd’s bush to enjoy an afternoon nail pampering session.opi nail colours, opi manicure, opi colourcopia nail bar, opi colourcopia westfieldour only big decision of the day was to select a colour for our nails and with so many beautiful shades to choose from (there are more than 240 in the store) it did prove a little tricky.

andrea, who was having the normal opi manicure (£30), went bright, selecting ‘suzi’s hungary again’ (say what?) i chose a vibrant plum colour called ‘miami beet’ from the varnishes for my gel mani (£40) and we left our talons in the capable hands of miglena and angie. suzi's hungary again opi nail polish, opi nail colours, opi manicure, opi colourcopia nail bar, opi colourcopia westfieldsuzi's hungary again opi nail polish, miami beet opi nail varnish, opi nail colours, opi manicure, opi colourcopia nail bar, opi colourcopia westfieldmy nails were filed, buffed and all oil was removed from the surface to ensure the varnish would bond properly. my therapist talked me through the process answering my many questions. i always take the opportunity to get some insider tips on how to improve my naughty nails. dehydration was the diagnosis and since my visit i’ve been lathering on the hand cream and cuticle gel like a mad woman.opi nail colours, opi manicure, opi colourcopia nail bar, opi colourcopia westfieldsuzi's hungary again opi nail colour, opi nail colours, opi manicure, opi colourcopia nail bar, opi colourcopia westfield

as my hands were prepped for the gels andrea was treated to a soothing hand and arm massage with a coconut oil she had chosen. apparently she’s ‘nutty for all things coconut’ her words, not mine. alright those might not have been her exact words, but she definitely cracked a joke along those lines. goofball. suzi's hungary again opi nail colour, opi nail colours, opi manicure, opi colourcopia nail bar, opi colourcopia westfield

a base coat was applied to my nails and two coats of the colour, in between applications my hands were placed in an l.e.d light for 30 seconds each time. that’s seriously quick. usually i’m balanacing my hand in the uv light for a matter of minutes minutes, meaning gel nails normally take an age, but opi have shortened the process. it’s fast and hassle-free. suzi's hungary again opi nail colour, opi nail colours, opi manicure, opi colourcopia nail bar, opi colourcopia westfieldsuzi's hungary again opi nail colour, opi nail colours, opi manicure, opi colourcopia nail bar, opi colourcopia westfieldit ran so smoothly that i was finished around the same time as andrea and i didn’t have to factor in drying time either. perfect.

it is quite literally nail heaven in colourcopia – so many pretty shades to browse and we found ourselves particularly intrigued by mariah carey’s liquid sand varnishes.

a week later my gel nails are still holding up strong – not a chip or scratch to be seen. gels are supposed to last up to two weeks, i will keep you posted. andrea, who does her nails on a daily basis, assures me she hasn’t needed a touch up either. we’re impressed. suzi's hungary again opi nail colour, opi nail colours, opi manicure, opi colourcopia nail bar, opi colourcopia westfieldsuzi's hungary again opi nail colour, opi nail colours, opi manicure, opi colourcopia nail bar, opi colourcopia westfieldsuzi's hungary again opi nail colour, opi nail colours, opi manicure, opi colourcopia nail bar, opi colourcopia westfieldsuzi's hungary again opi nail colour, opi nail colours, opi manicure, opi colourcopia nail bar, opi colourcopia westfieldsuzi's hungary again opi nail colour, opi nail colours, liquid sand opi varnish, opi manicure, opi colourcopia nail bar, opi colourcopia westfieldsuzi's hungary again opi nail colour, opi nail colours, opi manicure, opi colourcopia nail bar, opi colourcopia westfield

a spring in my step and on my nails

i may be jumping the gun here, but is that spring i smell? blue skies and sunshine? yes, it’s still freakin’ cold, but there is hope. i see a faint light at the end of the winter tunnel.white spring manicure on peanut buttered blog

in celebration of all things bright and sunny, i painted my nails a dazzling, stark white, (all over the runway, don’t you know) totally wishing that i had a golden bronze tan to set it off. ah well. we can’t have it all.

i’ve filled my house with fresh blooms. yesterday the afternoon sunshine was streaming through the windows, so (naturally) i took pictures of my nails in front of the flowers. it was quite pretty.white spring manicure on peanut buttered blog

but then i realised that a plain white manicure isn’t exactly tuesday talons worthy. it’s white nail polish. three coats. you can figure it out. so to make up for my sub-par efforts this week, i took a scroll through some of my favourite spring-suitable manicures from the tuesday talons archives.white spring manicure on peanut buttered blog

pastels are a theme. obviously. so is pale pink. and a hint of sparkle. here are a few of my favourite manicures for the lighter, brighter season ahead.
