watermelon mani

i’m still into my ‘let’s pretend it’s spring by wearing bright and perky manicures’ phase. it’s not ideal, but it’s necessary. i’m giving london two more weeks to get its sh*t together before i’m hauling ass back to sydney, where it is currently 29 degrees. in autumn.

in the meantime, i’m channelling summer with this fruity little number. ain’t she cute?watermelon nail art manicure

i was having a little play with polka dots (you know about my obsession – and here’s a secret, you guys only see about a third of the polka dot manis that adorn my nails. that’s how common they are) and randomly tried black dots on this punchy watermelon pink.

the effect didn’t look too different to watermelon seeds, so i just went ahead and added a white and green stripe to the edge of the nail. ét voila: a cutie patootie take on my favourite fruit.

to avoid smearing, keep your two coats of pink as thin as possible and really, truly wait for them to be completely dry before going about your dotting and striping.

i do the whole end of the nail white, then add the green on top as its easier than trying to paint two really thin stripes side by side. but keep in mind that by this point you’re working with four coats of nail varnish – thick and gloopy if you don’t allow them to dry properly.

so remember: two coats of pink. dry completely. black dots and white stripe. dry completely. green stripe. dry completely. top coat. time consuming, but worth it – you don’t want to get to the very last step and ruin it all by smudging. be patient.

kate spade polka dot manicure

kate spade polka dot manicure, dot manicure, black and white spot manicure, kate spade iphone case, DIY dot manicure, peanut butteredi’m obsessed with kate spade. i want everything she designs. everything i tell you. but if i must choose one style, i’m especially enamoured with her polka dots. her iphone cases are a particular fave, as are her gorgeous wallets.

so recently i’ve been lusting after the carlisle street collection, and given my affinity for polka dot manicures (oh, you hadn’t noticed? there were these way back when, and this pretty little number, and don’t forget this one just a few weeks ago) i thought i’d emulate kate’s cute design. i know, i need to put a lid on the dots. polka dot aversion therapy perhaps. i just can’t help myself! they’re too cute! but i promise this will be the last polka dot post for a while (fingers crossed behind back).kate spade polka dot manicure, dot manicure, black and white spot manicure, kate spade iphone case, DIY dot manicure, peanut buttered

anyway, while they’re adorning my nails i may as well tell you about them. the dotty look is nothing new for me, but an entire nail bed covered with cute little polkas? yes please, that is shiny and off-piste territory.

so, the usual: a base coat, followed by two thin coats of black (essie licorice for me). once dry, take up your dotting tool – something polky – but if it has an extra pointy tip snip the end off otherwise your dots will be miniscule. and we want them a little fat and jolly. pour a little puddle of white out onto a non-absorbant surface, dip your dotting tool in and get your spot on.kate spade polka dot manicure, dot manicure, black and white spot manicure, kate spade iphone case, DIY dot manicure, peanut buttered

two or three dots per dip worked best for me, before it got too tacky and left a string of polish behind. not neat. allow to dry completely before moving. (remember my trick? one episode of girls with your hands on your knees will work perfectly.)

and there we have it. polka polka polka. inspired by kate spade.kate spade polka dot manicure, dot manicure, black and white spot manicure, kate spade iphone case, DIY dot manicure, peanut buttered

dot dot dot

a few weeks ago i was experimenting with different patterns on my nail polish, and came up with this – three hot pink polka dots on a metallic gold base. the manicure won dozens of compliments and i was enamoured with the style.tuesday talons - dotty

i revisited the look this week, opting for a deep pinky-red with white dots. so many people asked how i managed the little spots, so here is a little tutorial…

as always, start with short nails and a buffed smooth nail bed – you wouldn’t believe the difference using a nail buffer for a couple of seconds makes on achieving a perfect smooth paint job.tuesday talons - dotty

apply a base coat and two coats of your primary colour, and allow it to dry completely. seriously – watch tv with your hands on your knees for 15 minutes or something – you don’t want a semi-dry base when you start your polka dots, or you’ll be in smudge city.

next, pour a small amount of your next colour onto a piece of cardboard or plastic. take a wooden cuticle stick with a pointy end and dip the end into the colour. with a steady hand, touch the cuticle stick to your nail to create a dot.

you need to be quick and sure in your movement. if you shake or hesitate, the polish will gloop and you’ll come away with a string of polish that makes a mess.

touch the stick to the nail for a second longer to make a bigger dot, and more briefly for a teeny tiny one.

tuesday talons - dottyi like to make different patterns on each nail – a triangle of dots, three curving around the nail bed, big, medium to small, or three in a line down the centre. it does take a little practice to perfect creating the polka dots.

spray on some quick-dry finish spray and again, wait.until.they.are.dry. you didn’t go to all that trouble just to mess up those pretty little polka dots.

there are endless options with this style – try some out, let us know your favourite! x
